Making use of historical data – Introduction to Bayesian methods for sensory and consumer scientists , 5th June 8am (GMT+1/BST)

Product code: R-Bayes

Remote training

June 5, 2020

Virtual option available

The remote learning package consists of a live lecture delivered online by one of the Qi Statistics team, together with free access to the Qi Bayesian analysis app for you to play with for 2 weeks, plus a pdf of the lecture notes and email support on the course materials and software after the course for up to 2 weeks. More than just a recorded webinar and as close to face-to-face training as it can be!

Bayesian statistical analysis has been successfully used in other industries for many years now, yet is rarely seen in the Sensory and Consumer world. This technique offers an approach to formally combine historical data with current data to see results of trials put into context with past research rather than treating each trial in isolation and then making subjective interpretations.

Additionally, benefits can be seen in both reduction of sample sizes and increased ability to make robust decisions with a move away from reliance on the contentious ‘p-value’.

In this session, we give you the understanding to the key concepts of these analysis methods,

Course Outline

  • Introduction to Bayesian ideas & what they can offer
  • What do you need to know about Priors & Posteriors?
  • Bayesian as a tool for decision-making
  • Advantages/Disadvantages compared to classical approaches
  • From theory to practice…the next steps

 Pre-requisites/Software

A knowledge of basic statistical methods (e.g. probability distributions, summary measures, variability, confidence intervals). No software is required. The web-based Qi Bayesian app for preference tests will be demonstrated and supplied as a 2 week free licence. There are no workshops for this course, due to it’s introductory nature.

Other course information

This short course is based on the face-to-face training developed by Qi Statistics for sensory and consumer scientists, but instead offered in bite-size chunks redesigned for online learning, as part of a remote training package. You can sign up for as many or as few modules as you wish. They have been created to be delivered stand alone, although some may have pre-requisites regarding assumed statistical knowledge, so check the course details before booking!

  • After you complete your purchase you will receive an email with a link and password for the session.
  • A pdf of course notes and any other required course materials will be sent to you before the session, for you to print off
